If you are new to spread betting it works like this:
England are playing Germany today and their total goals are quoted as 2.3 - 2.5(subject to change). If you think that it will be a high scoring affair, you could buy at the the higher number(2.5 in this case), say for example's sake £10 per whole goal. If for example 4 goals are scored in total between the 2 teams you would win (4-2.5)=1.5 x £10 = £15. Of course if the match finished with more goals you would win £10 for every extra goal. If the match finished with say 2 goals for example you would lose (2.5-2.0)=0.5 x £10 = £5(and you would lose a maximum of £25 if the match finished 0-0 in this example). As you can see you can win/lose a lot more than your original stake.

If you thought it would be a low scoring affair you would sell at the lower number, again say for example's sake £10 per whole goal. If for example the match finished as a goalless draw you would win (2.3-0)=2.3 x £10 = £23. If 3 or more goals are scored you would lose - say 3 goals are scored you would lose 3.0-2.3=0.7 x £10 = £7(and for every extra goal you would lose a further £10).

So, in general with any event where a spread is offered to you - you can buy at the higher number or sell at the lower number. If you buy at the higher number you win more, the greater the outcome is than this number(and lose more the lower the outcome is than this number). If you sell at the lower number you win more, the lower the outcome is than this number(and lose more the higher the outcome is than this number).

The good thing about this offer is you are allowed to limit your first 5 bets to a maximum possible loss of £20 each bet. However, with the free bet you can win upto £400 on the total goals on any live UK, UEFA Champions League or UEFA Cup match, but can't lose anything!
